Lidded Jar Raku & Sagger
This tall, slender lidded jar brings a warm, earthy elegance to any space. Its rounded form is finished in a blend of brown, white, and beige tones, creating a soft, organic look that suits both modern and coastal-inspired interiors.
Raku is an ancient Japanese form of firing perfected by American potters in the early 1950’s. It involves taking a bisque fired pot from the kiln while still red hot and putting it in a “reduction chamber” filled with sawdust. As soon as the hot pot touches the sawdust it ignites. The chamber is then closed off so that the pot smokes in a reduced (no oxygen) atmosphere. This cracks the glaze put on the pot and allows the smoke to penetrate the cracks “drawing” on the surface. No two vessels ever come out the same ensuring each piece is totally unique.
Sagger Firing is another alternative firing technique where the pot is enclosed in another pot or wrapped in clay or aluminum foil and then fired. Various “combustibles” can be placed inside the sagger and in close contact with the vessel. These combustibles burn off inside their container and leave their marks and colours on the pot. Every vessel is different depending on the combustibles used and the way they react to the fire and clay.
