Raku Horn Vase

Raku is an ancient Japanese form of firing perfected by American potters in the early 1950’s. It involves taking a bisque fired pot from the kiln while still red hot and putting it in a “reduction chamber” filled with sawdust. As soon as the hot pot touches the sawdust it ignites. The chamber is then closed off so that the pot smokes in a reduced (no oxygen) atmosphere. This cracks the glaze put on the pot and allows the smoke to penetrate the cracks “drawing” on the surface. No two vessels ever come out the same ensuring each piece is totally unique.
